Meet the Artist

I’m Kim Koch, the artist behind North of 8 Art Studio, creating colorful, nature-inspired artwork from my home studio in the beautiful Minocqua, Wisconsin area.

I’m a self-taught artist who believes in creating every day, whatever form that creativity may take. I’m continually developing my skills, always looking for new ways to learn, grow, and challenge myself as an artist. For me, the creative process is an ongoing journey, and I’m inspired by the opportunity to keep exploring, experimenting, and pushing my work in new directions.

Much of my inspiration comes from the place I’m fortunate to call home. I love painting the wildlife, lakes, and florals that make the Northwoods so special. My work combines bold, vibrant color with expressive brushwork and modern impressionist influences. I strive to capture not only what a subject looks like, but also the feeling and emotion it evokes—the beauty of the natural world, the character of the wildlife, and the joy of being Up North.

The name North of 8 Art Studio is a playful nod to the way people talk about being “up north.” Depending on where you live, there’s often a certain point where you cross a line and suddenly find yourself Up North. For me, Highway 8 represents that idea—a simple dividing line where, once crossed, you are truly in the Northwoods.   Being North of 8 is more than a location; it represents a feeling, a sense of place, and the beauty and freedom that comes with being Up North.

I’ve felt increasingly driven in recent years to step outside my comfort zone, share my paintings with others, and put my art out into the world. Through North of 8 Art Studio, I hope to create pieces that bring a little of the Northwoods into people’s homes and remind them of the places, experiences, and feelings that make life meaningful.
